Well it certainly has been a while hasn't it... I'm looking forward to getting back into blogging, a side of my business that I'd left on the shelf back in 2014. I'm planning on a regular weekly blog that will update you all with that's happening millinery wise, and as you know that often includes glimpses into my personal life too! I'm going to try and keep the majority of the 'family' related posts to my personal blog "Of Millinery & Motherhood" (that I'm also in the process of resurrecting), so if you want to read more about my family adventures then that's the place to check out.
2016 has been an interesting year for me and my little family. I've recently changed jobs so I'm now commuting less and spending more time at home, which also means I can dedicate more time to the business. I've started making plans for 2017 to grow the business into something amazing that I'd like you all to be a part of (more about that in the coming weeks). For now I'd like to tell you all about an upcoming event I'm trading at!
On the 3rd December I'm having my first stall at the Alternative & Burlesque Fair in Glasgow. I'm really excited to be showcasing my products there and hope that some of you might pop in to take a look at my designs as well as the rest of the traders who will be there on the day, including the fabulous Cult Creation who makes unique handbags and purses! Lest we forget...
Today all over the world people stopped and observed a two minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the conflicts of the past 100 years. Remembering those who gave their lives so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have today is always something that has been of great importance to me. For the past couple of years now I have been making my own Poppy Hair Flowers and raising money for Poppy Scotland. This year I was also asked by HumAnima CIC to make some of my poppies in purple to commemorate the animal lives lost in military service since World War 1, with money from the sale being donated to Animal Aid.
My poppies sell at £8.00 each, with £1 from each sale going to the respective charities. I am happy to say that this year so far we have raised £20.00 for Poppy Scotland and £3.00 for Animal Aid from the sale of the poppies. Thank you to everyone who made a purchase this year!

DC Presents... Suicide Squad!
Everyone who knows me knows that I am a complete geek, yep! Well imagine how excited I was to find out that DC are making a Suicide Squad movie! And of course that means my favourite bad girl will be hitting the big screen. Well today came the announcement I'd been waiting for... the casting of Harley Quinn! Margot Robbie (not the most well known actress prior to Wolf on Wall Street but I remember her as Donna in Neighbors and I thought she was brilliant in Pan Am with Christina Ricci) will be stepping into the harlequin jumpsuit and rampaging around the streets of Gotham City (perhaps even with her Puddin' Mister J too if rumours are to be believed). She's maybe not everyone's choice for Harley but she's just been endorsed by Harley herself with this tweet from Tara Strong...
Listen y'all... @MargotRobbie captivated me on screen in Wolf...she is a true stunner & is an enchanting actress...she has my vote #Harley
— tara strong (@tarastrong) November 10, 2014
I think she certainly has the look and I'm very excited to see the movie in 2016!
I've always taken inspiration from Harley Quinn, I love the classic combination of black and red, its quote a feature in my own wardrobe. This year I created my Harley Quinn inspired hair flowers from MCM Comic Con Scotland and they flew off the stand... I've got a handful left and if you fancy grabbing one then you just need to head over to my Etsy store!
Harley Quinn Inspired Hair Flower, RRP £8.00 |
On the subject of Harley Quinn and DC Women in general I'm loving the recent DC Bombshells Range. I've just finished creating an amazing fascinator for a customer in the States inspired by the DC Bombshells Catwoman image (another of my favourite Supervillans!!). I love working on Superhero/Supervillan piece so if you have a fascinator/hat in mind and want it brought to life why not drop me a line at LisaJ@offwithherheadmillinery.co.uk and please, please leave you comments here, tell me which Superheros/Supervillans you love to see me immortalise in millinery?

Look who's wearing Off With Her Head Millinery!
Look who's wearing Off With Her Head Millinery!!
For those of you who are new to my blog, you'll have missed the BIG news earlier in the year that the amazing Kirsten Vangsness (aka Penelope Garcia in Criminal Minds) wore a couple of my hair flowers in Season 9 of the hit CBS show Criminal Minds! BIG news I know, and as I have been a HUGE fan of the show since the beginning you can only imagine just how excited I was!
Well... since then I've been sending Kirsten regular hair flowers as she is a part of my Hair Flower of the Month Club (more info on the club to follow!!) and this week I found out that she has been wearing them regularly during the filming of Season 10 (due to air on the UK from 20th October)! CBS tweeted this behind the scenes picture of Kirsten and AJ Cook who appears to be smelling the hair flower! You can just imagine my excitement (there may have been a little 'Snoopy Happy Dance')!
Now as I mentioned Kirsten is a part of my Hair Flower of the Month Club, which means that every month she receives a little package with an exclusive hair flower based around a specific theme. For example in March the theme was 'Spring Greens' and in September the theme was 'Talk Like A Pirate'. Each flower is handmade by me and is only available to members of the club. "How can I become a member?", I hear you ask... well its simple. You can email me and I can get you signed up straight away! Each flower costs £8.00 plus postage and you can sign up for a year paid in 4 x 3 monthly installments of £30.00 (including postage in the UK, outwith the UK postage is slightly higher). You also get two bonus flowers - a birthday flower (sent out in the month of your birthday) and a special Christmas/Winter themed flower in December.
Email me to sign up at LisaJ@offwithherheadmillinery.co.uk OR why not try a taster subscription for 3 months over on my Etsy Store

Earlier in the year I approached model Black Lotus with an idea for a mini collection that would be inspired by cats of all shapes and sizes and she agreed to model the collection for me. Working with photographer Kitty Radford of Kitty KEMS Photogrpahy and MUA Charlize Golightly I'm sure you can agree that the final campaign is simply puuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect!

I spent a little time chatting with model Black Lotus about her modeling and other pursuits and here's the result of our little interview!
Off With Her Head Millinery (Lisa): Tell us a little about
yourself
Black Lotus: Ah, I’m so bad at these
questions! Well I’m originally from a little town in Wales, now living in
Hertfordshire, I’ve been modelling for almost 5 years and I’ve just taken up
photography, although I also write fiction in my spare time as well. Around the
more creative pursuits I’m a legal secretary by day and spend a lot of time
sitting behind a desk trying to convince my work colleagues that I’m actually boring,
and have no interesting stories to tell on a Monday morning!
L: How did you get into modelling?
BL: Completely by accident! It was
never planned, but I was in touch with a lady who lived locally to me who had
just taken it up. I was having a bit of a crisis of confidence so she offered
to do me some nice pictures as a birthday present. While we were shooting she
told me about Model Mayhem and advised me to sign up if I wanted to do more, as
well as a bunch of other girls that were modelling in Manchester that I could
go to group shoots with, and it all just started from there!
L: Who is your biggest modelling
inspiration and why?
BL: This is a tough one – there are
so many great models out there! At a push it would have to be an American model
by the name of Velocity. I’ve been following her for quite a long time. She has
such a great look, and is so versatile with it, as well as being great with her
posing. More than that though she has been very ill recently, and to see the way
she has dealt with her problems has really put me in awe of her personality as
well as her abilities as a model.
L: The new range you’re
promoting is called ‘Felidae’ and is a celebration of all things feline… what
is your favourite cat, domestic or wild, real or fictional?
BL: I love big cats, and I have a
bit of love for tigers (exactly why I nabbed the tiger fascinator after the
shoot!) but my favourites would have to be cheetahs. They’re such graceful and
beautiful animals. Oh, and the Egyptian Goddess Mafdet is usually depicted with
the head of a cheetah, and was the goddess of legal justice, so they link into
my chosen career quite well also!
L: If you could have dinner with
any 3 people alive or dead, who would they be and why?
BL: Terry Pratchett, George R R
Martin and R A Salvatore. As a fantasy writer, I’ve taken great inspiration
from these three authors, all big favourites of mine. (Terry Pratchett is in
fact the only reason I wrote my debut novel at all!) I was lucky enough to meet
Terry once before and he seemed like a charming man from a brief conversation -
I’d just love to pick all their brains about writing and the way they work,
drink up as much knowledge as possible from them.
L: If a movie was being made of your life, who
would you want to play you and why?
BL: Oh, I’m really bad with actress
names so knowing who to pick is so difficult! Maybe Scarlett Johansson? She was pretty good as Black Widow in the
Avengers movie – great actress. Although to be fair I think maybe Sarah Chalke
as Elliot Reid in Scrubs is a little closer to being me than anybody else!
L: Plans for the future,
upcoming shoots, campaigns?
BL: I wouldn’t say I have any
specific plans really - my modelling is just a hobby that like to indulge in as
much as can, but I’m very relaxed about it. I have a few shoots booked with
some of my favourite photographers, Kestrel, Magic Owen and Pirate Photography
to name but a few, however! My main goal now is just to shoot for more
designers and just to keep creating images that other people like to look at!
Any actual plans I do have in
the modelling world are more on the photography side of things now, I bought my
first camera this month and am just trying to get to grips with it before I go
into model (and possibly a little of everything else!) photography. I’m very lucky
in that a couple of friends, who also happen to be talented models, have said
that they would be happy to let me shoot them, so I’m hoping it’ll go quite
well!
L: How can people contact you to
book you for modelling work?
BL: The best way to contact me is
either though my website (www.theblacklotus.net) or, if you have a Model Mayhem account through the site
(www.modelmayhem.com/891742).

SS 2013 Turning Japanese Collection
Back in the spring I was luck enough to be selected from the many applicants to showcase an 8 piece collection of millinery at the SS2013 Nightwalk Fashion Show in The Arches in Glasgow.
The theme for my collection was Japanese Art... taking imagery that really makes you think of Japan and traditional Japanese culture and translating this into stunning headwear! The show was a fantastic experience and one I was so very proud to be a part of alongside other designers such as Obscure Couture and Maggie Mowbray Millinery. Several of hour of preparation during the day culminating in a 2 and a half hour fashion show in the evening that went by in a flash.
After the show I got a fantastic response and subsequently 3 of the 8 pieces have now sold!
The remaining pieces are now available to purchase from my Etsy Store

I think I'm 'Turning Japanese'...
A few months ago I decided to take a chance and made a submission to Nightwalk Events for their SS2013 Fashion Show. I know they get a lot of submissions from designers and I wasn't confident that my designs would spark their interest, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got an email through to tell me I had been selected as one of the 16 designers who would showcase a collection on the 30th April this year at The Arches in Glasgow! Actually... that's a bit of an understatement... I was 'over the moon' to be selected!!!
Nightwalk Events Facebook |
I'd had an idea for a collection I wanted to put together inspired by my love of Japanese style and culture... so I decided to make this my Spring/Summer Collection... and called it 'Turning Japanese'. As with everything I create the pieces will have a vintage feel to them and will feature everything from Cherry Blossoms to Sushi, from Kanzanshi Hair Ornaments to the Japanese Flag.
To create my collection I'm looking to raise £1000. This money will not only help me to purchase the materials I need to make my 8 piece collection. It will also help my to put together and style 8 complete outfits for my models and go towards publicity for the 'Turning Japanese' collection.
I'm offering some fantastic perks for your contributions Contributions to my campaign start at just £1. Everyone who gives just £5 or more will be entered into a prize draw to win a one-of-a-kind fascinator from Off With Her Head Millinery. From £10 upwards I have goodie bags up for grabs that will include hair clips, hair flowers, and signed limited edition prints of the complete collection depending on your contribution. I also have 2 pairs of tickets for the event in Glasgow on the 30th April for those who fancy being extremely generous!

And even if you can't contribute financially to my campaign you can help by getting the word around about my campaign and my little business! Share with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, mention me on you Blog! I'm extremely grateful for all your help and support!
